1 Tour Down Under 2011
David OLLE in Adelaide 0415 866 061, anytime

Tour Down Under Tuesday January 18, stage 1, Mawson Lakes to Angaston, 138km

Results:
1 Matthew Goss* HTC-Highroad   3:17:08
2 Andre Greipel Omega Pharma-Lotto   st
3 Robbie McEwen Radio Shack   st

Matthew Goss is in the leader's Ochre jersey.

Mark Renshaw,  Mark Renshaw,  Mark Renshaw, would be my favorite Aussie rider at the moment.  Delivers his sprint captain to the line, on cue, every time.  Cavendish & Goss.  ‘Twas Goss today, finishing off the final 250m solo, but expect Cav to surface later in the week, maybe even tomorrow.

Skippy Report:
Andre Greipel was the german sausage in the Australian sandwich today (see results)

Cuisine report:  No crows, no pie-floater, just home cooked Spanish Tortilla & salad last night.  But tonight off to an Italian restaurant, where last year our treasurer was ‘swanning' around.

Tomorrow:  Stage 2, Tailem Bend to Mannum, 146k

Today  the TDU kicked off in earnest with a flattish stage from suburban Adelaide to rural  Angaston.  Unlike the Tour de France, the Tour Down Under uses short stages, often featuring multiple circuits of the stage finish town (3 tomorrow).  This successful formula not only enhances the experience for the spectator, who may easily view the passing of the peloton 3 times, but also keeps the racing closer to its origin.  Meaning we, the fans, do not have to travel far from a major city to see all the action.  Bonus!

NB this is Lance Armstrong's last race outside of the USA.  Unless he comes out of retirement again.  Mind you, his return this time (for 2 full years) greatly benefitted cycling in Australia, so good on him for that.

David Olle's ‘Tour de France' reports have featured on ABC radio's 774 DRIVE show in Melbourne, ABC national overnights and 3RRR FM's Breakfasters.  He chats regularly with all, and occasionally appears on Sydney's ABC radio 702 breakfast show.

David Olle has been involved in cycling for over 20 years, racing bikes from club to world levels, along with mountains of road riding and touring. He has written many stories and poems for different cycling magazines and worked as a sports journalist at Sydney 2000 and Melbourne 2006 games. David has holidayed and raced in Europe for the last seventeen  years. Qualified in first aid, he is also a level one coach and has managed the Australian MTB Team at five World Championships.

Along with covering the Tours of France, Italy and Spain for magazines, David Olle has supplied ‘special comments' for Melbourne and national radio stations. He conceptualized and currently produces the TV show ‘Top Bike TV' for community TV stations in all the Australian capitals.
